Laboratory of Mutagenesis and Carcinogenesis
The injury of the genetic material (DNA) due to interactions of chemical (carcinogens) and physical (UV light, ionizing radiation) agents with DNA is accounted a pivotal event in the initiation of the process of carcinogenesis. The DNA damage induction, fixation of lesions into DNA and their manifestation, however, are dependent on many factors and cellular processes. The research activity of the Laboratory is dealing with the problems of genetic toxicology, nanotoxicology, chemical mutagenesis and carcinogenesis, and chemoprotective effects of natural substances and extracts from medical plants. The investigation is focused on several topics:
  • Molecular and cellular mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis;
  • Chemical structure – biological activity relationship;
  • Role of non-genotoxic mechanisms in carcinogenesis;
  • Role of photoactivation in chemical carcinogenesis;
  • Genotoxicity of simple and complex mixtures;
  • Chemoprotective potential of natural substances and extracts from medical plants;
  • Biomarkers of inter-individual variability in the susceptibility to ionizing radiation.
